Effective date: 2026-09-11. Applies to version 1.1 (numeric package 1.1.12); earlier 1.0.0 has no preference sync.

MarginGlyph provides local webpage annotations and annotated screenshot export. It has no developer-operated server, account system, analytics, advertising, or developer-operated cloud sync. The extension does not upload your annotations, screenshots, or browsing URLs to its developer or third parties.

Information processed on your device

  • Current tab URLs are checked against saved layers to show an annotation badge. Only URLs associated with layers are saved; a general browsing-history log is not created.
  • When you activate markup, selected page text and your notes/drawings are processed to display and restore annotations. Highlight matching may inspect page body text locally.
  • Notes, drawings, selected text/context, page URLs, and viewport information are stored in the Chrome profile. Storage is local and is not encrypted by MarginGlyph.
  • A screenshot is captured only when you request it. The most recent screenshot, its capture time, source path, dimensions, and mode are retained locally for preview/download until replaced or cleared.
  • Export JSON, Download PNG, and Copy PNG send the chosen content to a local file or your clipboard. You decide whether to share it elsewhere. URL metadata in new exports omits credentials, query strings, and fragments; visible page content and your annotation text are not automatically redacted.

Color preference synchronization

Custom color values and saved/recent slot flags use Chrome extension sync storage. Chrome may sync these preferences through your Google account when browser sync is enabled; otherwise they remain available in the local profile. MarginGlyph does not receive your account identity. Annotations, screenshots, page URLs and text are never placed in sync storage. The attached/detached preference, toolbar words/icons mode, orientation, and last-used color remain local. Clear custom removes a saved color from its slot; changes propagate through Chrome sync according to your browser settings. Separate extension IDs have separate storage.

Permissions

activeTab and scripting allow page markup after you click the extension. tabs permits local URL matching for saved-layer badges. storage saves layers. clipboardWrite enables the explicit Copy PNG action. No continuous all-site content script is installed. If you enable automatic following in the detached window, Chrome requests optional access to HTTP(S) websites. This lets MarginGlyph activate its local markup tools as you switch web tabs or navigate, without an icon click on each page. Disable automatic following revokes this optional grant. Page content is processed locally and is not uploaded; untouched pages do not create saved annotation layers.

Retention and deletion

You can remove individual annotations in the editor and clear the retained screenshot in its preview. Uninstalling the extension removes its Chrome storage. Export backups before doing so if you want to keep annotations. Files and clipboard copies you create are outside extension storage and must be managed separately. Chrome/operating-system backup, clipboard history/sync, and browser-store services follow their own settings and policies.

Important limits

On-page markup is not a secure password editor. A hostile website or another privileged extension may interfere with page content or observe interaction. Do not type secrets into on-page notes. Review exported page content before sending it to others.

Contact and changes

For privacy questions or support, contact viperzka@gmail.com. Any future feature that transmits content would require an updated policy and the appropriate user controls; this version syncs only the color preferences described above.

Limited use

MarginGlyph uses information accessed through Chrome APIs only to provide its page annotation and screenshot features, in accordance with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. It does not sell this information, use it for advertising or credit decisions, or transmit it to The Business Duck. Files and clipboard content you choose to export are shared at your direction.
